Handling, surviving, dealing with rejection

Handling Rejection
Dealing with rejection is something we may have to face in our lifetimes. We like to be liked and when we aren't appreciated for who we are and all our finer qualities, it hurts.

No matter what type of rejection you are suffering, be it personal or from other sources, there are simple steps you can take in dealing with rejection and getting past the pain.

Below are some of them:

  • Acknowledgment. Sad but true, accept that it's over (or it's not going to start). Try not to dwell on the negative. At this stage, simply work on accepting the fact it's over or it's not going to happen. You must turn the rejection into an acceptance of yourself for who you are and not what you feel the other person wants you to be.

  • Get out of "What ifs". This can easily spiral out of control. What if I had acted differently? What if I hadn't….? Reflect on any learning you can gain from the experience and then apply that learning forward, not backwards.

  • Surround yourself with people who do care. Get your support team - friends, family - to spend time with you to break you out of feeling this way. Allow yourself to feel the pain, but do not wallow. Keep busy, exercise, take care of yourself, and if you have trouble coping with the situation, don't hesitate to seek support.

  • Move forward with an open heart, ready to focus on new potential. Truthfully, the only positive way to get over rejection is to learn from the rejection and move on.

  • Educate yourself. Buy books that deals with your current situation.

Dealing with rejection and getting past the pain is not easy, but it can be done. You need to get up, learn from the experience, and move on with your life. It sounds simple but can be complicated.

Rejection hurts no matter if it's from something seemingly small or more significant. But, the way we deal with it makes a big difference in whether we allow rejection to define us or if we use it to learn from and move on to do much better things.
