Handling Depression
It impedes their ability to work or go to school, and even disrupting their normal eating and sleeping habits. It impairs the ability of a person to function in everyday situations by affecting moods, thoughts, behaviors, and physical well-being.

Classic signs and symptoms of depression include:
  1. Loss of interest or pleasure in normal activities
  2. Disturb sleep
  3. Changes in appetite patterns
  4. A deeply sad or depressed mood
  5. Difficulties concentrating
  6. Fatigue, loss of energy
  7. Guilty feelings or feelings of worthlessness
  8. Recurrent thoughts of death or suicide

Here are some useful tips that may help you overcome the bad inner thoughts and feelings that depression brings:

  • Take time to assess why you are feeling depressed. Feeling sad is an expected and normal reaction to a situation; however, when these feelings last for an extended period of time or significantly interfere with your ability to function properly, it might be wise to change your situation.

  • Increase Social Support. Confide in others. During the time that you feel despondent, seek the emotional support of family and friends.

  • Replace negative thinking with realistic thinking.  Try not to believe the negative thoughts, like feelings of failure or blame, that depression causes. Such thoughts and feelings should ease as depression subsides.

  • Spend a few hours outdoors, just to have a different environment. Participate in activities that make you feel good about yourself and that you enjoy. Take your attention off your problems for a while.

  • Try to avoid making any major life decisions. If you have to, ask a trusted friend or family member for help.

  • Don't drink alcohol or take unprescribed drugs, as either can cause serious interactions with antidepressant medication, and can exacerbate depression.

  • This may be enough to help you pull through milder depressions of short duration. But in most cases, you will not be able to fight depression on your own. Depression is an illness that requires medical attention to be managed effectively. If you are suffering from depression, it is important that you seek professional help.

Millions of people will experience a depressive disorder each year. Everyone gets down now and then in response to life's disappointments, but when feelings such as loneliness, sadness, hopelessness, and irritability continue and prevent a person from functioning normally, depression may set in.

Depression can be devastating to all areas of a person's daily life affecting their relationships with family and circle of friends.
